Here are a few links to Backer Rod suppliers and info.

http://www.ramset.com.au/fileupload/resources/PolyFoamBacker.pdf

http://www.wrimcowaterproofing.com.au/index.php?p=1_40

http://australianglasstools.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=13&products_id=312

As you can see it is used fairly widely in the construction industry. But, try to buy it from a casual storeperson at Bunnings and you'll be met with a very dumb look.

Cheers

Hi Millsy
The 10mm flexible foam is called spaghetti foam, plastic rope or <strong>Backer Rod</strong>.(now I'm confused) Some may know it by a different name. It is a closed cell polyethylene foam.
You should be able to buy it from Bunnings and most fibreglass outlets that sell waterproofing membranes. It is available in a varying thickness from about 6mm up to 40mm in 2mm or so variations. I have also seen it at 75mm thick!
I usually buy mine as I need it because it is vulnerable to damage. However, you can purchase it in rolls up to 50m.

I hope this helps you

Thanks for the advice. We were quoted $800.00 to have a shower waterproofed! We decided to try it ourselves and found your site. We will read all instructions and talk to as many people as we can after reading the pitfalls you present.

Thanks again
Vicky

(Admin: Glad we could help)
