It's not easy to identify Asbestos. But you can be fairly sure that if the home was built before 1985 that it has Asbestos somewhere. It may not be visible. These include the insulation around your hot water pipes. The fibro sheeting in the eaves of a brick and tile home.. The ridge cap, guttering or barge cap on some tin roofs. The shed in the back yard which is usually made from left over materials from other buildings collected over years until there is enough to make the shed.
A Fibro home will most definitely contain Asbestos!
The method used to test for Asbestos involves laboratory analysis. Kits can be purchased to send samples to a certified laboratory. Be very careful collecting the samples as this usually involves damaging the bonded asbestos and releasing fibres into the atmosphere.

This is a DIY bathroom renovation that we were asked to quote on the tiling.
As you can see the old Fibro Walls have been cut to allow for a soap holder. The fibro is easily identified as having asbestos because the back of the sheeting has dimples similar to that of a golf ball pattern. Current wall boards are smooth on both sides and if you were to take this to a waste disposal they would advise you of the asbestos content. Typically this type of fibro only has a 3% content of Asbestos Fibres. This is still enough to cause a panic at the local Tip.

Hole cut into Fibro.
